Interview with Jeff Horowitz and Bart Yasso, from “Maybe Running Will Help Podcast” with Nicky Tamberrino

Winter running isn’t just about enduring the cold — it’s about embracing it. With frosty mornings and snow-covered trails, this season offers runners a unique opportunity to connect with nature, themselves, and the running community in a profound way. It’s a time to find beauty in the challenge and gratitude in the journey.

Discovering Beauty in the Cold

There’s something magical about stepping out into a winter wonderland. The snow, untouched and pristine, creates a canvas for adventure. It’s a reminder that even in the coldest moments, there’s beauty to be found. Bart Yasso, legendary runner and author, captured this perfectly when he described finding “critter prints” on a quiet trail.

“The feels-like temperature was gratitude,” he shared, shifting focus from discomfort to the joy of simply being able to run. Jeff Horowitz added, “When you’re out there and the snow is fresh, it’s like Mother Nature’s confetti. You feel like you’re part of something magical.” Moments like these remind us of the wonder that running can bring.

Setting New Goals with a Grateful Heart

A new year is a time for reflection and renewed purpose. For Bart, his focus is on sharing his passion through his upcoming book, 100 Runs of a Lifetime, a celebration of some of the most extraordinary runs around the world. Meanwhile, Jeff is exploring the impact of cross-training with a rowing machine. “Every year, I try something different,” he said. “It’s about figuring out the game all over again and seeing how you can maximize performance as things change.”

Not every runner feels the pull of traditional goals. Nicky Tamberrino, host of “Maybe Running Will Help,” admitted her struggle with motivation. “I want to run a marathon, but I really do not want to train for it,” she said, reflecting a sentiment many runners can relate to. Yet, as her co-hosts reminded her, years of running build resilience that stays with us, even during lulls in training.

The Power of Gratitude

Perhaps the most moving story came from Bart Yasso, who shared the journey of Colleen Kelly Alexander. After surviving a near-fatal accident and enduring 27 surgeries, Colleen not only returned to running but completed a marathon, dedicating her finisher medal to those who saved her life. Her resilience is a testament to the human spirit and a powerful reminder to find gratitude in every step.

“She taught me to focus on gratitude,” Bart reflected. In every run, no matter the distance or pace, he carries that lesson with him. Jeff added, “When you accept the worst possible outcome, you free yourself to give your best. It’s a technique I use not just in running, but in life. Once you know you can live with the worst, you’re unstoppable.” For runners facing their own challenges, Colleen’s story is a beacon of hope and inspiration.

Rediscovering Community

Running is so much more than putting one foot in front of the other. It’s about connection. Whether it’s sharing a trail with friends, cheering on fellow runners, or simply exchanging a wave with a stranger, the running community brings people together in a way few other activities can. Nicky’s role as a lululemon ambassador has deepened her appreciation for this sense of belonging. “It’s not just about me anymore,” she said. “It’s about bringing people together.”

Jeff emphasized the importance of these connections: “When you look at longevity and vitality, the common thread isn’t diet or exercise alone — it’s community. Having those connections gives us purpose and keeps us going.”

Reframing Challenges as Opportunities

Every runner has faced tough runs. Whether it’s battling the elements, navigating unexpected detours, or overcoming self-doubt, these moments teach us resilience. Bart shared how he’s learned to find something positive in every run, even when things don’t go as planned.

Jeff added a valuable perspective: “If you can accept the worst possible outcome, then you’re free to do your best. Running teaches us that setbacks aren’t the end — they’re a chance to grow stronger.” By reframing challenges as opportunities to grow, runners can approach obstacles with a renewed sense of purpose and optimism.

Running with Gratitude

Winter running isn’t just about braving the cold — it’s about embracing the journey. It’s about finding joy in the crunch of snow underfoot, gratitude in the ability to move, and connection in the shared experience of running. Whether you’re chasing PRs, rediscovering your love for the sport, or simply enjoying the beauty of the season, winter running offers endless opportunities to grow.

So lace up, step outside, and let gratitude guide you. As Jeff put it, “Running reflects life. It’s a relationship, and like any relationship, it evolves over time.” Every mile is a gift, and every run is a chance to discover something new about yourself and the world around you. Here’s to running with purpose and finding beauty in every stride.
